Egyptian Granite Types: Complete Guide for Importers & Project Buyers
A guide to Egyptian granite for importers and project buyers: black, red, grey, white and green varieties, where each is used, how polished and flamed finishes compare, and what to put in an RFQ.

Egyptian granite is specified where a surface has to cope with heavy use: kitchen worktops, busy floors, stairs, facades and paving. The varieties differ widely in colour and mineral pattern, and those differences matter more to the finished project than the name on the order. This guide explains how to compare Egyptian granite types, which applications each colour family tends to suit, and what an importer should include in a request for quotation.
Understanding Egyptian Granite
In the stone trade, “granite” is used for a group of hard, crystalline natural stones that are typically chosen for durability. Like “marble”, it is a commercial term, and it is applied more broadly than the strict geological definition. What matters for a project is the performance of the specific material, so where a specification sets technical requirements, ask for test data for the stone you intend to buy.
Egyptian granites range from deep black to red, pink, grey, white and green. Beacon Capital’s collection includes fifteen Egyptian granites, supplied as slabs, tiles and cut-to-size elements such as countertops, stair components and paving. Each granite has a material page listing its confirmed finishes, formats and typical applications, and technical test data is available on request.
The format you order depends on how the stone will be used. Slabs suit fabricators and projects where large pieces are cut locally, such as countertops and bespoke panels. Tiles are produced to standard or project sizes for flooring and cladding and arrive ready to install. Cut-to-size elements, including stair treads, worktops and paving, are produced to drawings so that little or no cutting is needed on site.
How Granite Varieties Differ
Four characteristics separate one granite from another in practice:
- Background colour. The overall tone seen from a distance: black, red, grey, white or green.
- Grain and mineral pattern. Granite is made of visible mineral crystals. Some stones are fine-grained and even; others carry larger crystals or bold contrasting patterns.
- Uniformity. An even stone is easier to lay across large areas and to match between batches. A strongly patterned stone makes a statement but needs more care in selection.
- Response to finish. Polishing deepens colour and shows the crystal pattern clearly. Flaming produces a textured, non-reflective surface and usually makes the colour look lighter and more muted.
As with all natural stone, colour and pattern vary between blocks. For project quantities, material is reviewed for consistency before production, and samples can be arranged for evaluation.
Black Egyptian Granite
Black granites are widely used for countertops and high-contrast floors.
- Black Aswan: a fine-grained, deep black granite. Its even appearance makes it suitable for large countertops, flooring, wall cladding and stairs where a consistent black is required.
- Magic Noir: a deep black background with mineral patterning, giving a bolder look than a plain black. Used for countertops, cladding, flooring and monuments.
- Hoody Dark: a deep charcoal grey with natural mineral patterns. A softer alternative to pure black for floors, worktops and stairs.
Polished black granite shows its colour at its deepest. Flaming usually makes black granite look lighter and greyer, which is worth seeing on a sample before choosing a flamed black for exterior paving next to polished black inside.
Red Egyptian Granite
The red and pink granites give the warmest palette in the collection.
- Red Aswan: rich red tones blended with dark grey and black minerals. Used for countertops, exterior cladding, flooring and monuments.
- Royal Red: crimson red with dark mineral accents, used for countertops, wall cladding, flooring and bathroom vanities.
- Red Fersan: warm red with grey and black mineral patterns, suited to countertops, cladding and vanities.
- Rosa El Nasr: soft pink tones with black and grey minerals, a lighter option for flooring, exterior cladding and stairs.

Red granites carry strong colour, so they are often used either as the main surface in a warm scheme or as an accent against neutral stone. Because the mineral pattern is prominent, larger orders benefit from batch selection so that adjacent pieces sit well together.
Grey Egyptian Granite
Grey granites are a flexible family for commercial projects: they suit modern interiors, circulation areas and exteriors without dominating the design.
- Gandola: grey tones with black and white mineral patterns, used for countertops, flooring, wall cladding and exterior cladding.
- Qusair: refined grey tones with black mineral patterns, used for countertops, wall cladding, flooring and feature walls.
- Halayeb: a blend of white, grey and black mineral tones, used for countertops, flooring, wall cladding and stairs.

Grey granite is a practical choice where the same stone must run from inside to outside. A polished finish can be used indoors and a flamed finish outdoors in the same material, keeping the colour family consistent while changing the surface for grip.
Light, White and Green Granite
White and light. New Halayeb has a bright white background with distinct black and grey mineral patterns. Fantastic White has a bright white background with subtler grey and black minerals. Both are used for countertops, flooring and cladding, and give a lighter look than most granites while keeping granite’s durability.

Green and gold. Verdi Green combines rich green tones with black and grey minerals. Verdi Yellow has warm golden tones with green and grey mineral patterns. These distinctive stones are used for feature walls, flooring and cladding where colour is part of the design.
Typical Granite Applications
Granite’s durability makes it suitable for demanding surfaces. The most common uses are:
- Kitchen countertops, islands and backsplashes, fabricated to size with edges and cutouts. See kitchen countertops.
- Flooring in homes, lobbies and commercial circulation areas. See flooring.
- Stairs, including treads, risers and landings produced to drawings. See staircases.
- Wall cladding for interiors and selected exterior facades. See wall cladding.
- Paving, steps and landscape elements, usually in a flamed finish. See outdoor solutions.
- Reception counters and vanities in hospitality and commercial interiors. See reception counters and bathroom vanities.
Many Egyptian granites are specified for both interior and exterior use. For facades and paving, the stone and finish should be confirmed against the fixing system and the project’s requirements before production.
Countertops: what to confirm
Countertops are the most detailed granite orders. Before production, confirm the thickness (20 mm and 30 mm are listed on our countertop page), the edge profile, for example bullnose, mitred or bevelled, the position and size of cutouts for sinks, hobs and taps, and the finish. Countertops are fabricated to approved drawings, so accurate site measurements and a clear drawing are the most important inputs. Where a run is longer than a single piece, agree where joints will fall.
Polished vs Flamed Granite
Every granite in the Beacon Capital collection is listed with two confirmed finishes: polished, and flamed on request. Finish availability for a specific material, format and quantity is confirmed at quotation stage.
| Polished | Flamed | |
|---|---|---|
| How it is made | Surface ground and polished to a high gloss | Surface exposed to a high-temperature flame, which roughens the crystal surface |
| Appearance | Reflective; colour at its deepest; crystal pattern clearly visible | Textured and non-reflective; colour usually lighter and more muted |
| Surface grip | Smooth and slippery when wet | Textured surface with increased grip |
| Typical use | Interiors, countertops, reception areas, feature walls | Exterior paving, steps, terraces and selected high-traffic areas |
| Availability | Listed for all fifteen granites | Available on request |
Use Natural Stone, a campaign of the Natural Stone Institute, describes flamed stone as having a weathered, textured look, excellent slip resistance and working well on granite. If slip-resistance performance is part of your specification, request test data for the chosen material and finish rather than relying on the finish name.
For a broader view of stone finishes, including the textured options used on marble, see our marble finishes guide.
What Importers Should Include in an RFQ
A granite enquiry is quoted faster and more accurately when it includes:
- Material, or the colour family and a reference image if you are still choosing.
- Format: slabs, tiles or cut-to-size elements, with drawings for fabricated pieces.
- Dimensions and thickness: thicknesses of 20 mm and 30 mm are listed for materials such as Black Aswan; confirm others with the supplier.
- Finish for each item: polished or flamed, and where each surface will be installed.
- Edges and cutouts for countertops and vanities.
- Quantity per item, so the material can be selected for consistency.
- Technical data required, for example water absorption, density, strength, abrasion or slip resistance, if your project specification calls for it.
- Destination and preferred delivery term.
If colour matching matters, ask for a sample before ordering and agree how the production material will be approved. For large or repeat orders, keep the approved sample as the reference for future batches.
